St James Davis
St James Davis and his wife La Donna were visiting Moe the chimp at an animal sanctuary outside of Bakersfield (Calif.) when a pair of chimps viciously attacked Davis.

He is listed in critical condition. For those that don't know who St. James Davis is, he added a lot of color as a driver/car owner to the NASCAR Winston West Series for a number of years. You may remember his familiar white #22.

For those that know him or even those that care, we encourage you to leave your prayers and best wishes for his recovery.

  • Dick Bown
My heartfelt prayers are with both of you and Moe. We had great times during our racing days, and I enjoyed having you camping out at Rose Auto Wrecking.

If God had wanted chimps to be caged he would have made them that way. Some day chimps and midgets will rule the world. Beware!

  • George & Barb Sowers

I don't know you personally, only from what I've read, but I want to wish you a speedy recovery and my prayers go out to you, LaDonna and Moe as well. Please take some solace in the fact that people all over the country and rooting for you and I, for one, hope that you and Moe can be reunited sometime soon. My heart goes out to you for your great love of Moe and to Moe for living without your immense love and care for the past months. God bless you all.

I met La Donna and St.James about 15 years ago. They would stop in Portland Oregon every summer to race at the old Portland Speedway. My boss the former stock car champion Dick Bown is a friend of the Davis family. They would camp out at Mr.Bown's wrecking yard each year and work on St.James'es racecar.I would wash engine parts in our parts washer for St.James.He use to have me save magnets out of automatic transmission pans so he could stick them inside his engine oil pan to collect metal particles. One year I was rewiring my 50 Chevy pickup and ran out of several items I needed to finish the job.The Davis'es gave me the items I needed to finish. The Davis'es are good people and need our support.

I will be glad to help you with Moe if at all possible. I have cried over the fact that he has to be kept away from you. Of course I am also sorry you and your husband were attacked by the other chimps. Moe should've never had to leave your home in the first place. People are so mean and ignorant thinking chimps are dangerous just because they have territorial instincts and use them sometimes. Moe was not living with other monkeys when he was raised by you and therefore was never a big threat to anyone. He would never want to hurt you because you are the dominant chimp in his eyes.He loves you and wants to obey and please you. He was unfortunately scared by an electrical shock one day in his cage, and ran thru your neighborhood frightening a few people. All would have been fine if the big bad cops had not acted all cocky. I bet they had the sirens going and all. Poor Moe. I'd like to kick someone's ass for you over this and I don't even know you, but I love all animals and always wanted a chimp when I was young. If you two after all of this still want to Moe to live with you, put a message back to me on this site, and we'll just see what we can do about that.

  • Jan Stiffler
This is the latest article that I have read about St. James condition: http://www.dailybulletin.com/Stories/0,1413,203%7e21481%7e2916875,00.html I volunteer at Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor, FL. We are all very saddened by the accident and are praying for St. James, LaDonna and Moe. He and his wife are wonderful people to have provided a loving home for Moe. We are extremely concerned about Moe. According to one article that we read LaDonna visited Moe and was not allowed to see him even though he could see her and was waving and doing flips for her. This is very cruel to not let them have a visit.

  • Dana Wray
I just heard about your story. St. James will be in my continued prayers for recovery and LaDonna to support during this very difficult experience with continued hope and trust through the Lord.

  • Curry
Well, today I found this, which is encouraging: http://www.sbsun.com/Stories/0,1413,208%257E12588%257E2916810,00.html

LaDonna & St. James - May the Lord God hold you close to him. May His peace and comfort wash over you. I pray Dear Father, please touch this man and his lovely wife, St. James & LaDonna, with your healing hand, not only their physical traumas, but their emotional trauma as well. Dear Father, I know that as horrific as this tragedy is, that you will use it to show how awesome your authority over adversity is. God bless this family and keep them. In Jesus Christ's precious name I pray...Amen.

  • Jill Malik
I saw La Donna being interviewed a day or so after the accident. I have thought often of them and pray God will grant them all peace. Many, many people have you in their thoughts. Most of us will never know you.

  • Charles
St. James is a hero. He saved his wife by pushing her aside and taking the brunt of the attack. He must really love her to sacrifice so much.

  • Mary L.
I miss seeing St Jame sitting among the many signs encouraging our support to help free Moe. As I told him before, Since Moe apparently did not leave his home and go around biting people, he should be allowed to remain in his home the same as any other pet. Although, I would have stopped and looked at Moe I would have never tried to pet him. He needed his space. I truly hope and pray for St James complete recovery and that some day Moe will return home. I also, belive that investigation should reveal how the othe Chimps were allowed to be out of their cage? Why did it take so long to come to the aid of St. James and La Donna? In the future, tere should be an enclosed area for visiting Moe that is not open to entry by other animals if they do break free. La Donna, you have my Prayers and support.

  • Al Messimer
I was a minor part of the 22 crew (as a pick-up pit crew member) when you took on the California Speedway the first time. I'll always remember you and LaDonna as being great racin' people. My whole family and our church is praying for you from Brisbane Australia. Good on ya mate!

Perhaps there is a reason for St. James's current suffering. Because of all the media attention this story has received, perhaps awareness has been significantly raised for chimps. People must understand that these are wild animals and aren't human, as much as they appear to have human qualities. I will pray for you tonight, St. James.
