Source: Ringers Gloves
![]() BROWNSBURG, Indiana -- After the NHRA event at Bristol being postponed (originally scheduled May 18-20) until July 6-8, the NHRA straight-liners returned to action after a couple week break at the O’Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Raceway in Topeka, Kan., over the weekend, while the NASCAR stars in all three of the top series’ headed to the “Monster Mile” in Dover, Del., for their weekend events.
Ringers’ racer Brandon Bernstein picked up his third win in four races in the Top Fuel category. He took on good friend and fellow competitor J.R. Todd in the finals.
I watched this race from the line and boy, was it a close one! Brandon edged out J.R. right at the end of the quarter-mile, 4.582/320.51 mph to 4.667/299.86 mph. The win moved Bernstein to the top position in NHRA POWERade Drag Racing points.
Greg Anderson continues to dominate the Pro Stock class in 2007. In every final he has been to, he has won, including Topeka on Sunday. An interesting stat is all three of Anderson’s opponents on Sunday red-lighted against him. His victim in the final round on Sunday was Madison (Ill.) winner Dave Connolly who fouled out by 0.008-seconds.
The NHRA hot-rodders head to the Route 66 Raceway in Joliet (Ill.) this weekend for the Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Route 66 Nationals, but not before a couple of NHRA Funny Car drivers take to the high-banks of Eldora Speedway tomorrow night for the Nextel Prelude to the Dream presented by Old Spice.
Ron Capps and Cruz Pedregon will jump into dirt late models tomorrow night and test their dirt trackin’ skills against some big names in the NASCAR world. More information on the Nextel Prelude to the Dream can be found at www.eldoraspeedway.com and a special note from Kenny Wallace to Capps at http://www.nhra.com/content/news/20924.htm.
The NASCAR weekend kicked off on Friday with the Craftsman Truck Series hitting the Monster Mile of Dover International Speedway. South Point Racing driver Brendan Gaughan started the race in the fifth position, but was involved in the first lap accident that took out several trucks. Gaughan was scored in the 36th position.
The Ringers supporting team of Green Light Racing and its driver Chad McCumbee and Tim Sauter both brought home top-20 finishes; McCumbee in 13th and Sauter, 17th. McCumbee will make his first Nextel Cup start attempt this weekend at Pocono Raceway in the Petty Enterprises owned No. 45.
Penske Racing’s Ryan Newman took the Budweiser Pole on Friday for the Autism Speaks 400 presented by Visa, but had to wait until Monday to race due to inclement weather that hit the area on Sunday.
On seven different occasions throughout the 400 lap event, Newman and his No. 12 Alltel Dodge led for a total of 135 before crossing the finish line in second place, behind first time winner Martin Truex Jr.
Newman’s teammate Kurt Busch was involved in an accident with Tony Stewart on lap 271. When both drivers came to pit, Busch brought his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge alongside Stewart’s No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolet to express his thoughts about the accident. Needless to say, NASCAR didn’t approve of Busch’s actions and his hot rod was parked for the remainder of the race. Busch was scored in 42nd.
Penske Racing and the Nextel Cup circuit head to Pocono Raceway this weekend, while the Busch Series and Craftsman Truck Series head to Nashville Superspeedway and Texas Motor Speedway, respectively.
Newman will first make a stop at the aforementioned Prelude to the Dream to compete against some of his fellow Nextel Cup drivers with proceeds from the night benefiting the Victory Junction Gang Camp and the Tony Stewart Foundation.
Last Thursday, Chub “Chubzilla” Frank picked up his second World of Outlaws Late Model victory of the season, with this win at Delaware International Speedway. Chubzilla and team pocketed a nice $10,000 check for the First State 50 win.
