ASA SPEED TRUCK CHALLENGE GETS BACK TO CIRCLE TRACK RACINGUPLAND, California -- Although the experience of racing the extremely tough road courses of Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix and California Speedway in Fontana gave the ASA Speed Truck Challenge (STC) drivers and their crews a lesson in setup changes and higher speed racing; the consensus is from most of the drivers that they are ready to get back to their bread-and-butter…circle track.

President of ASA STC, Jay Rutherford is pleased as well. “We deliberately have inserted these two tough road courses into our schedule to challenge a whole range of different driving skills for our drivers, but I must admit, it will be fun to see them get back to only “turning left,” laughed Rutherford. Two-time ASA Speed Truck Challenge champion, Darren Young in the #18 United Nissan S-10, showed the 24-truck field on both road course venues who had the talent, with fairly easy wins at both tracks. For his efforts, Young has launched himself into second position in the championship point’s race and also picked up the extra E3 Spark Plug bonus check of $500 at each. “I do feel that I had a bit of an edge on the longer road courses,” said Young. “I have been driving them for years and that style of racing just seems to fit my driving abilities,” he concluded. Young is truly being modest as he has shown this diverse age field that the older guys still have what it takes to win. His teammate, 15-year old Bear Rzesnowiecky #3, also racing for United Nissan is close on Young’s heels at ever race however. Rzesnowiecky currently holds the lead in Rookie of the Year points by a strong margin.

The Championship point’s race for the 2007 ASA Speed Truck Challenge is going to once again be a shoot-out to the finish. Current leader Victor Pfluger #80 (340), continues to have great outings at ever venue finishing second to Young at Firebird and fourth at California Speedway. The rest of the top five points challengers are Darren Young #18 (333); Randel King #35 (321); Bear Rzesnowiecky #3 (306); and Jim Putman #12 (294). Austin Murphy #07, who is second in the Rookie point’s race, is close behind the pack within striking distance with 290 points.

Tucson Raceway Park for this week’s oval racing will be a hot affair for the drivers. Weather should be extremely hot with temperature approaching 110 degrees. “The hotter the better,” says #80 Victor Pfluger in the Parker Farms Dodge. “I’m not letting go of this lead and I’m not going to let a little heat bother me,” Pfluger stated emphatically.

Race time for the Renegade Dominator Trophy Dash will be at 8:20, with the winner picking up a nice $300 check presented by Ball-Renegade. The 100-lap main event will be at 9:45 on this newly resurfaced 3/8-mile track and an additional $500 from E3 Spark Plugs will certainly “fire things up.” “It should be a great race, where we could have our sixth different winner for the season,” said Rutherford. “There should be some real “fireworks!”

The Speed Truck Challenge travels the Southwest competing at Lucas Oil I-10 Speedway, Tucson Raceway Park, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Orange Show Speedway, Havasu 95 Speedway, Irwindale Speedway, Firebird International Raceway, California Speedway and has raced numerous events at Phoenix International Raceway and Mesa Marin Raceway. The Speed Trucks are full tube chassis, 108 inch wheelbase, 350 horsepower Van Gordon Racing V-8’s, a 2-speed direct drive transmission, aluminum quick-change rear end, 8-inch Hoosier Racing tires, powered by Torco Race Fuel and are capable of speeds of 155 MPH. The Speed Trucks sport exact replica fiberglass bodies in Chevy S-10, Chevy Colorado, Ford Ranger, Dodge Dakota and Toyota Tacoma.

The ASA Speed Truck Challenge will release their television broadcast schedule on the Outdoor Channel next week.
