RINGERS’ BACKED PENSKE RACING GOES 1-2 IN DAYTONA 500

MOORPARK, California – There is no other race known as “the Super Bowl of auto racing” but the one and only Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. On Sunday night, the Ringers’ supporting team of Penske Racing and driver Ryan Newman brought home the checkered flag at the 50th anniversary of the historic and honored race.

In the closing laps of the race, lap 197 saw Newman in fourth place and his teammate Kurt Busch right behind him as a drafting partner. After failing to race his way into the Daytona 500 field after suffering electrical problems in the first Gatorade Duel on Thursday, Busch used a champion’s provisional and started at the tail of the field in 43rd.

At the end of the 200 lap, 500-mile race, Busch’s drafting push guided his teammate Newman across the start/finish line to take the checkered flag straight into Victory Lane to accept the Harley J. Earl trophy and the accolades that go along with being the winner of the Daytona 500. Newman’s teammates Busch, who finished second and Sam Hornish Jr. who finished 15th, were there to celebrate with him and the Penske organization.

Sunday had a number of “firsts” for the Penske Racing clan. It was the first NASCAR Sprint Cup win for Newman and his crew chief Roy McCauley; first-ever Penske Racing 1-2 finish; first Penske restrictor plate win and Newman’s first win in 81 races. But the most important first would have to be for team owner Roger Penske. While Penske has won almost every other prestigious race in all forms of auto racing, the Daytona 500 was one trophy he lacked. Now Mr. Penske can say he has won the two biggest races in motorsports, the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500.
