MATHEWS WINS TRIPLE IN ONTARIO SPORTSMAN STOCK CAR SERIES

ONTARIO, Canada — Canadian racer Steven Mathews claimed a trio of victories this past Saturday evening at the Horseshoe Resorts Triple 50’s event in the Ontario Sportsman Series (OSS) event held at Barrie Speedway. The talented pilot drove his #88 McColl Racing stock car to the front of the pack after starting on the fifth row in all three races.

After qualifying on the pole position with a time of 14.55, the New Liskeard, Ontario resident and Ron Sutton Winner’s Circle Driver Development pilot was anxious and excited to get the night started. Some small setup changes between the qualifying and first 50 lap event would be all that was needed for the McColl NASCAR Canadian Tire Series chassis, Delaware crate motor, #88 as he would continue his perfect Saturday scoring all three victories on the evening.

In the first 50 lap feature race, Mathews started in the tenth position due to the ten car invert imposed after the qualifying laps. Working the tricky outside groove at Barrie Speedway, Mathews patiently worked his way forward and took the lead on the twentieth lap. From that point forward, the Canadian drove consistent race laps and was unchallenged to take his first victory of the evening.

The second 50 lap event would be similar to the first with Mathews being forced to start in the tenth position. With the outside line getting a slow start, most cars were side by side leading the eventual race winner to be patient. As the race progressed, Mathews charged forward and made an attempt to pass for the third position before making contact with a fellow competitor. The result of the incident was a penalty sending the McColl Racing driver to the tail of the field. As the green flag flew yet again, Mathews made quick work of the cars in front of him as they now ran single file. Making his bid for the lead on lap 26, Mathews went to the outside of the current leader as they raced door handle to door handle for nine laps around the Barrie Speedway. Mathews eventually sealed the deal and took the lead and victory to score his second win of the evening.

The third of three 50 lap events provided less drama for the previous kart champion as he started ninth and quickly worked his way forward. After passing for the second position on the outside, Mathews put constant pressure on the leader before he managed to slip by when the leader made a slight error entering turn one. The young Mathews then led for the remaining 30 laps to score his third victory.

“This McColl Ford Fusion was just on rails tonight,” exclaimed Mathews after his third victory. “It feels great to be the first ever to win all three features and complete the hat-trick, but it is due to a lot of supporters and people that it was possible.”

Ron Sutton, head of driver development commented, “Steve has really stepped up his game this year. When we signed him, our goal was to win some Focus Midget races … which he has done. The Stock car wins are icing on the cake! He has a bright future.”

Mathews would like to thank everyone who has made this possible: Bill Mathews Motors, McColl Racing, Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle as well as Sparco/Johnson research and Performance (JRP). An extra special thank you goes out to the McColl Racing crew.
