Green flag thrown on 2022 season

Episode 387

January 16, 2022

Ladies and gentleman start the 2022 race season!

It seemed that attending the 33rd Annual Northeast Expo at the Augusta Civic Center only lacked someone with a giant green flag to wave signifying the unofficial start to the 2022 racing season. It would have been cool to maybe have someone in the balcony beckoning everyone to get out in the shop to put those finishing touches on that race car or motorcycle or get on that race sled and get ready for some exciting races, finally!

After cancellation in 2021, the atmosphere seemed charged with anticipation as hundreds made their way into the Civic Center to look at the myriad types of racers.

Though everyone wore masks, the enthusiasm was not dampened for talking about racing. Note if anyone in my photos were not masked, either they or I asked for the mask to be removed for the photo whereupon after the photo, masks were re-applied. I was impressed how the folks generally followed the masking requirement.

Feed the County PASS race at Spud Speedway met with enthusiasm

One of my personal goals with Expo attendance was to get a feel for the return of stock car racing to Spud Speedway June 19th with the “Feed the County 150”. I wanted to get an idea of whether the two-year hiatus forced upon Spud Speedway by the COVID-19 pandemic affected those who will be part of the 2022 event.

The most enthused about returning to Spud Speedway was Spencer Morse, North Waterford. He raced his PASS Modified at the last Spud Speedway race in 2019 finishing third. In 2021 he finished sixth in PASS Mod points. Morse is a crowd favorite at the Caribou track and would love to win the mod race. If he were to do so, I am unsure if the track could contain his enthusiasm. (HTF Motorsports photo)

Spenser Morse mentioned that he will likely limit his race schedule to three races in the seat of his PASS Modified, one of which will be at Spud Speedway. He is the PR Director for the fledgling North East Big-Block Super Modified Series (NEBBSMS). On display was the Rob Summers #5 big-block super modified. (HTF Motorsports photo)

The announced inaugural NEBBSMS schedule according to Morse:

Saturday, May 7th – Oxford Plains Speedway – Kick Off Classic

Sunday, May 15th – White Mountain Motorsports Park

Friday, June 10th – Thunder Road International Speedbowl

Saturday, June 25th – Monadnock Speedway

Friday, July 15th – White Mountain Motorsports Park

Saturday, August 6th – Lee USA Speedway – Ollie Silva Mid-Summer Classic

Wednesday, August 24th – Seekonk Speedway – Boston Louie Memorial

Saturday, August 27th – Oxford Plains Speedway – Oxford 250 Weekend

Friday, September 30th – Thunder Road International Speedbowl – Milk Bowl Weekend

Saturday, October 8th – Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park – World Series Weekend

WAR unveils new SLM race car

Wyatt Alexander Racing unveiled their brand-new Clattenburg chassis Super Late Model (SLM) at the 2022 NEME. The chassis was brought from North Carolina by Wyatt via trailer in 2021 from the Salisbury, North Carolina manufacturer.

The paint scheme was based upon crew chief/grandfather Bob Alexander’s last race car built in 1990 before he retired. With help from TJ Brackett Racing the AR Bodies car made it to the show.

WAR’s first race will be the Easter Bunny twin 150’s at Hickory Motor Speedway, Hickory, North Carolina, March 18 & 19. They will also be racing at Spud Speedway’s Feed the County 150 and will be a local favorite. (HTF Motorsports photo)

Would you like to get into a race car? Bob Guptill, Turn 4 Automotive and Performance came up with this unique rental program with information at www.firstlapracecars.com. The car is designed for Oxford Plains Speedway’s Cruisers which is made up of American V6 front-wheel drive street cars with multiple safety modifications. This is a relatively low-cost way to try out stock car racing. Pricing and terms are explained on the above website. (HTF Motorsports photo)

Jason Trundy, promoter of the Maine Enduro Tour, was on hand at the Expo to discuss the Tour’s schedule and rules. He plans to bring the tour to the Feed the County 150 at Spud Speedway in June. (HTF Motorsports photo)

Another young team that UpNorth Motorsports will be following in 2022 is Durham’s Evan Beaulieu with the # 56 Hancock Lumber/Sunday Morning Farms/LB Cleaning/Nitro Designs SLM. Beaulieu has yet to announce if he is racing the Granite State Series or PASS Tour. If the PASS Tour, he thought he would be at Spud Speedway’s Feed the County 150 in June. (HTF Motorsports photo)

Racing at the Lake, West Cove Ice Racing

While looking for winter racing series in Maine I found West Cove Ice Racing a group of dedicated ice racers who race at Moosehead Lake in Greenville.

Check their Facebook page for information about their first race. They need 20 inches of ice. With this cold snap I suspect they will be racing soon. Their classes and rules are found on the Facebook page. (West Cove Ice Racing )
