The Project Team

Apex, the much-anticipated film about Formula 1 starring Brad Pitt, is set to hit theaters on June 25, 2025. While the title Apex is currently provisional, the final name is yet to be announced. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, renowned for his work on Top Gun: Maverick, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, known for blockbuster hits like Pirates of the Caribbean and Days of Thunder, the film promises a thrilling cinematic experience. Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion, joins the team as a co-producer and consultant, adding an authentic touch to the racing scenes. The film rights were fiercely contested by major studios, including Netflix, Apple, Amazon, Paramount, MGM, Sony, Universal, and Disney, with Apple TV+ emerging victorious.

Initially budgeted at over $130 million, the project’s costs reportedly ballooned to $320 million due to delays caused by Hollywood strikes and the ambitious production plan. This plan involved filming at various race tracks during Formula 1 weekends, enhancing the film’s realism.

Plot

The storyline of Apex centres around a veteran racer returning to motorsport to mentor a rising star. The struggling APXGP team recruits Joshua Pierce, a young Formula 1 talent played by Damson Idris. Recognizing the need for experienced guidance, the team brings in Sonny Hayes, portrayed by Brad Pitt. Javier Bardem, an Oscar winner, plays the team owner. Hayes, a former Formula 1 driver from the 1990s, left the sport due to a severe injury and later focused on endurance racing. The film promises an engaging narrative, with the story’s outcome to be revealed upon its release.

With this strategic move, the team aims to leverage Briatore’s extensive experience and track record to enhance its performance and competitiveness in the fiercely contested world of Formula 1 racing.

Revamping Team Structure and Strategy

The Alpine F1 Team has faced a challenging season, marred by internal disruptions and underwhelming performance. Before the season’s first race, the French press reported the resignations of Technical Director Matt Harman and Head of Aerodynamics Dirk de Beer, driven by dissatisfaction with the A524’s performance. The team soon confirmed these departures, prompting a significant reorganization of the technical management structure. Inspired by McLaren’s successful ‘tripartite’ management model, Alpine adopted a similar approach aiming to instil greater efficiency and innovation within the team.

Team Principal Bruno Famin has been at the forefront of these restructuring efforts, working tirelessly to revitalize the team’s managerial and technical frameworks. Lewis, George, and Toto Wolff got to experience INEOS Britannia’s AC75 Race Boat first-hand with guides Sir Ben Ainslie and Sir Jim Ratcliffe on Wednesday, 19th June. The trio visited the British Challenger of Record representing Royal Yacht Squadron Ltd for the 37th America’s Cup at their base in Barcelona ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix.

Lewis, George, and Toto were taken on a tour of the facilities, including spending time in the team’s simulator and meeting the wider team. George and Toto then joined Sir Ben on the water, with George getting behind the wheel of ‘Britannia’ whilst Toto joined the squad of cycling sailors, known as cyclors, to help power the boat via the onboard bikes.

It has been so exciting seeing the work of INEOS Britannia at the factory in Brackley over the past few years. It was so impressive to come to Barcelona and see it all coming together, including the race boat, for the first time. The technology involved is incredible, and my mind is absolutely blown! Ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend, Alinghi Red Bull Racing was joined by two motorsports icons, 8-time Grand Prix winner Daniel Ricciardo and 8-time MotoGP champion Marc Márquez.

Following Max Verstappen’s visit to the Base last year this week, the two racers took it a step further, not only getting the chance to foil the Swiss challenger’s two AC40 yachts but also race them on the America’s Cup venue. Swapping wheels for sails, Ricciardo and Márquez went head-to-head along Barcelona’s seafront for a friendly contest, feeling the adrenaline as they reached almost 90 km/h speeds.

Both boats were quick off the start line, but ultimately, the Australian driver got the upper hand, beating the Catalonian MotoGP champion on home ground. Márquez compared his experience in motorsports: “The speed is completely different. Maybe in kilometres per hour, it’s slower, but the feeling of the speed was super high. You don’t feel like you are flying when you’re in it. But then I saw Daniel’s boat flying by our side and realised I was too. We were foiling super smoothly.”

Haas has a new team principal for this season. Has the impact of Ayao’s work already been seen, and is the team heading in the right direction?

I think Ayao is doing a good job, and obviously, many new things are coming at him after he switched to the team principal position. It’s not all about the engineering and technical side anymore, but he also has to deal with the commercial aspects of running a Formula 1 team.

I know that he’s got a lot on his plate. He has already made some good changes to our technical infrastructure and moved some things around. It’s been positive, and we are heading in the right direction.
