It may only be the penultimate race of the F1 season, but the Las Vegas Grand Prix might be the most anticipated race of the season. The city of Las Vegas is pulling out all the stops, including a temporary track that will go right through the famous Las Vegas Strip. Even with the results of the Brazilian Grand Prix fresh in everyone’s minds, let’s start taking a look at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Here are the top drivers who are in contention to finish first in the first F1 race held in Las Vegas since 1982.

Max Verstappen

Without question, Verstappen is the clear favourite to win the Las Vegas Grand Prix, according to all of the major betting sites. The Dutchman has dominated the F1 season in a way that no other driver has in the history of the sport. After winning the Brazil Grand Prix, Verstappen has now won 17 of the 20 this season. Why wouldn’t he be favoured to win the last two? Clearly, Verstappen is the best F1 driver in the world right now by a big margin. The only caveat is that the Las Vegas Grand Prix is a new race with an unfamiliar course, which could level the playing field. But if anyone can adjust quickly to it, Verstappen can.

Sergio Perez

Perez might be the driver with the best chance of ending Verstappen’s five-race winning streak. He’s currently second in the F1 standings and has shown in the past that he’s capable of giving Verstappen a run for his money. In fact, two of the three races this season that Verstappen didn’t win were won by Perez. On the other hand, Perez has finished outside of the top three drivers in six straight races, so he’s not in the form he was in early in the season when he won his two races.

Lewis Hamilton

Currently third in the F1 standings, Hamilton is another driver who could pull off a surprise at the Las Vegas Grand Prix and prevent Verstappen from winning. Hamilton is a seven-time F1 champion, winning the title in 2020 before Verstappen’s reign began. During the current season, Hamilton has finished in the top three in six races, including a second-place finish at the Mexico City Grand Prix last month. In other words, he’s one of the few drivers with the skills and track record to steal the spotlight away from Verstappen in Las Vegas.

Fernando Alonso

Following back-to-back races in which he was forced to retire, Alonso finished third at the Brazil Grand Prix. While he’s yet to win a race this season, he’s been good enough to be fourth in the F1 standings. Without question, his best days are behind him, as Alonso hasn’t won an F1 race in over a decade. However, his experience level could prove useful on the unfamiliar track in Las Vegas.

Formula 1 has announced that the Sao Paulo Grand Prix will remain on its calendar until 2030 after a new five-year extension. The Sao Paulo Grand Prix, also known as the Interlagos circuit, has been part of the Formula 1 schedule for five decades. Officially known as the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, rightfully after the winner of the 1975 race, the Sao Paulo Grand Prix has one of the most iconic racetracks you’ll come across in a calendar year. The new five-year extension has become an exciting storyline ahead of the 2023 Grand Prix on November 5.

Sao Paulo Grand Prix Interlagos Racetrack

The Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace is a carnival atmosphere with an iconic racetrack featuring 15 corners over 4.3 kilometres. When it was first established, the circuit’s design featured inspirations from racetracks in the UK, US, and France. However, the racetrack has evolved into a unique spectacle that has seen some of its famous parts like the Senna ‘esses’ used at other venues. The racetrack has hosted memorable moments in the history of Formula 1, including the most recent battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen in 2021.

Other memorable moments include Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen’s World Championship in 2007 and Ayrton Senna’s emotional victory in front of his home crowd in 1991. 2022 also came with some surprises as George Russel won the F1 sprint and Grand Prix for the first time in his Formula 1 career. Kevin Magnussen was another shocker as he secured the Pole Position for the F1 sprint. The event attracted 235,000 fans and delivered an entertaining weekend of F1 racing action, which is customary at the Interlagos racetrack.

Interlagos Circuit to Host More Events

Formula 1’s five-year extension of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix comes after recent investments from the current administration. Sao Paulo’s Mayor Nunes is determined to upgrade the Interlagos circuit into a venue that can host a broader range of entertainment events like music concerts. Race promoter MC Brazil Motorsport has also worked closely with Nunes’ administration to enhance the fan experience, with more emphasis placed on sustainability and environmental, social, and governance initiatives.

Recently, 100 women from vulnerable backgrounds were upskilled and graduated in a special ceremony where they became qualified mechanics. Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali announced the new five-year extension, stating he was delighted the franchise “will be staying at Interlagos until 2030.” The president also commented on the wonderful carnival atmosphere that Brazilian fans bring to the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Dates for the 2024 Grand Prix are already out, with the Sao Paulo event going down from November 1.

The Interlagos circuit, officially known as the Autódromo José Carlos Pace after the 1975 race winner, has featured on the Formula 1 schedule for over 50 years and is one of the most iconic racetracks in the world. Featuring 15 corners over 4.3kms, the circuit’s design originally took inspiration from racetracks in the UK, the United States and France but has since had parts of the track, including the famous Senna ‘esses’, replicated at other venues.

Sergio “Checo” Perez will have “México en la cabeza”, quite literally, for his home race this weekend. The Oracle Red Bull Racing driver will celebrate Mexico by wearing a fan-designed helmet picked by Checo himself from thousands of submitted designs.

Oracle Red Bull Racing, in partnership with inter.mx and America Móvil (Telcel-Infinitum-Claro), ran the competition México en la Cabeza, which translates to “Mexico in the head” and saw entries from all over the globe. The competition called on fans to embrace everything that embodies Mexican culture to create a unique artwork for Checo, using his helmet as their canvas.

THE CAMPAIGN

Fans worldwide welcomed the challenge from Checo and Oracle Red Bull Racing, inter.mx and America Móvil (Telcel-Infinitum-Claro) to put pen to paper on a design which would bring Mexico to life on track. The excitement amongst fans grew globally as close to 32,000 people downloaded the template, and the call to action saw entries from 68 different countries and led to thousands of new members joining the Team’s fan platform, The Paddock. There was a massive increase in signups from many South American countries, including 63% from Venezuela, 55% from Bolivia and 40% from Ecuador and Guatemala. In Checo’s home country of Mexico, there was a nearly 50% rise in those wanting a chance to win a prized and rare spot on a Formula One driver’s lid.

The designs creatively reflected Checo’s passion for representing his country in the pinnacle of motorsport. The selection process was no mean feat, and the winning design was chosen by Checo, with the help of the Oracle Red Bull Racing Team, Mexican art curator Alfonso Miranda, Carlos Slim Domit, Grupo Carso, Chairman of the Board, Juan Ignacio Casanueva Pérez, CEO and Chairman of the board INTERprotección/inter.mx and Paola Perez.

Artwork from a member of ‘The Paddock’ – Oracle Red Bull Racing’s free loyalty programme – will decorate the 2023 Constructors’ Championship-winning car at the Circuit of the Americas this weekend.

Part of the team’s ‘Make Your Mark’ campaign, the competition sees members challenged to design a bespoke livery for each of the USA Grands Prix, as Max Verstappen and Sergio’ Checo’ Pérez race stateside three times in one season for the first time.

Thousands of new fans signed up for the programme to participate in the campaign. Over 2,000 unique liveries were submitted, which were individually reviewed by Oracle Red Bull Racing and the top designs were put to a vote on ‘The Paddock’, where almost 25,000 fans had their say.

In the end, Franco Cavallone took the chequered flag in the first place, with his design taking inspiration from the Lone Star flag of Texas.
