He was quite surprised when I had no difficulty recalling the occasion, albeit it was more than 50 years ago. It sticks in my mind because what should have been an exciting experience for me actually turned into one of the most unpleasant. As to the type of car, that too is etched on my mind for all the wrong reasons.
Visiting the annual Racing Car Show was a must ever since I had gone to the British GP at Brands in 1968 and watched Jo Siffert do the business! In those days, the Show was held in London, and I think it was 1971 when Olympia was the venue. I know Grand Prix World Champion Sir Jack Brabham opened it. As I was walking down one of the crowded aisles, a guy in a racing suit stopped me and asked if I would like to try the F3 simulator. It turned out to be F1 driver Trevor Taylor. He told me that the person with the fastest lap time of the day would earn a free trial at Motor Racing Stables, the Brands Hatch-based racing school.
It didn’t start very well! The large wooden steering wheel came off in my hands… To call this old F3 race car chassis with a screen balanced on the front of it, today’s generation of e-sporters would laugh at a simulator, but to me, it was the bee’s knees.

The win backs up Yuki’s victory during May’s Miami Grand Prix week, where he downed Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo in a mini jet boat race. The series sees Scuderia AlphaTauri and Oracle Red Bull Racing go head-to-head in unique vehicles and locations.
The event was a part of the (Un)Serious Race Series, where teams from Scuderia AlphaTauri and Oracle Red Bull Racing embrace the unpredictable, trading their usual high-tech Formula 1 cars for, in this case, mega truck race. These monolithic machines, three meters tall, five meters long, and with a heart-stopping 500 horsepower, provided a unique challenge for the racers.
Set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the operational Erzberg mine, known as the ‘Iron Giant’, the race was as much about the stunning location as it was about the fearsome vehicles. The track was a whimsical interpretation of the Red Bull Ring, boasting three key areas: ‘The Car Yard’, ‘The Swimming Pool’ and ‘The Big Drift’.
Alexander Rossi is one of the most recognizable names in racing circles, with the 31-year-old having achieved a whole lot behind the wheel to date.
The California native joined the Arrow McLaren IndyCar Team for the 2023 season last June and the team will be all the better for the acquisition as he brings a wealth of experience.
Rossi won the Indianapolis 500 in 2016 as a rookie, a remarkable feat. Having begun his career in the U.S., he moved to Europe, where he won four races in the developmental GP2 series for both EQ8 Caterham Racing and Racing Engineering.

Why did you choose engineering and when did you decide to learn Mechanical Engineering in Girona?
It’s always been clear to me that I want to be an engineer. I made up my mind at the age of six or seven. Initially, I was more interested in motorbikes, which comes from the fact that MotoGP is very popular in Spain. I also like to ride motorcycles myself. My dream was to race my motorcycle, but that dream has never come true because I didn’t have the budget. (Laughs)
During my university years, my interest shifted to cars. I had the chance to work for a go-kart team during my studies and we were fighting for the European and World championships. A constant quest for excellence applied to competitions then transferred in its entirety to production cars: in short, this is the Alfa Romeo philosophy inherent in the Quadrifoglio that has marked out the highest-performance Alfa Romeo creations since April 15th, 1923.
The first Alfa Romeo car adorned with the Quadrifoglio was the RL “Corsa” driven by Ugo Sivocci, who won the 14th Targa Florio in 1923, as the first of the ten times the brand took the laurels in this prestigious competition. And the same lucky emblem stood out on Brilli Peri’s “P2” when he triumphed at Monza in 1925 at the inaugural “World Manufacturers’ Championship”, the first of Alfa Romeo’s five world titles. In races in the late ’20s, the Quadrifoglio continued to distinguish the Alfa Romeos from the parent company from the same brand’s cars managed by the Scuderia Ferrari, which had the “prancing horse” as its emblem.
In 1950 and 1951, Giuseppe “Nino” Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio took the Alfa Romeo 158 and 159 – the legendary “Alfetta” – to success in the first two Formula 1 World Championships. Later, in the ’60s, the Quadrifoglio would stand out on the “ready-to-race” version of the “Giulia”, on the “TI Super”, and then joined the Autodelta blue triangle for several decades: from the “GTA” and “33” to the two World Championships won by the “33 TT 12” (1975) and the “33 SC 12” (1977).
