Moving On Up: Cem Bolukbasi

THE racing driver of Turkey – it’s fair to refer to Cem Bolukbasi like that. The former sim racer and F1 Esports driver made his debut in the FIA Formula 2 Championship, which is often the last step before one makes it into Formula 1.

What was your very first experience of motor racing?

At the end of 2019, I was invited to race in the GT4 European Series at Paul Ricard. The first time in a race car and on a Formula 1 track was simply breathtaking. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. As for the results, I qualified 3rd and finished in P5 with the team Borusan Otomotiv Motorsport.

What advice would you give now to someone eager to start racing?

2022 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix highlights

Introduction

Max Verstappen won the inaugural 2022 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, having pried the leadoff Ferrari’s pole-sitter Charles Leclerc early in the race, and defended it in an enthralling late-race battle.

Red Bull’s reigning champion took P2 off Carlos Sainz into Turn 1 at the start and soon began to close in on Leclerc. The Ferrari driver lost the lead to his rival on the main straight at the start of Lap 9 of 57 and pitted from mediums to hards on Lap 24, causing Verstappen to react with his stop two laps later. It seemed that Verstappen would cruise to victory in front of Miami Gardens’ marina…

That was until the Lap 41 caution, a VSC-turned-Safety Car triggered by a clash between Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris, which sent the McLaren driver into a spin as his right-rear tyre ripped off. Perez took the opportunity to pit for new mediums from P4, emerging there, with hard-shod Verstappen, Leclerc and Sainz ahead.

The Lap 47 restart saw Verstappen lead away but struggle to build up a gap to Leclerc. It was equally difficult for Sainz, who was being hounded by medium-shod Sergio Perez for the final podium place.

Swamp Buggy racing in Everglades

Reigning world champion Max Verstappen and Scuderia AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda went head-to-head in 900 horsepower V8 machines however, instead of duelling in F1, they travelled to the Florida Everglades for a unique hit of the swamp buggy racing. Here is all you need to know:

This weekend’s Miami Grand Prix is the first F1 race to ever be held in the American city with Dutchman Verstappen and Japanese driver Tsunoda heading two hours west to the city of Naples before the fifth stop of the 2022 season to enjoy a different form of high-octane competition.

Since 1949, the Florida Everglades has been home to swamp buggy racing with the F1 duo racing head-to-head in 900 horsepower V8 buggies with 68-inch wheels around a track submerged in standing water.

The expanded partnership also includes the delivery of Workday content across F1 channels, including prominent trackside branding at the European Grands Prix.

In addition, as Formula 1 continues to identify ways to digitally accelerate, it has selected Workday’s Human Capital Management (HCM) to supercharge its internal business processes and harness the full power of its talent for a changing world.

The combination of this expanded strategic partnership and selection of the Workday HCM system underscores the existing synergies between Workday and F1, where access to real-time information, the agility to respond quickly, and the ability to make informed decisions under pressure are vital to success.

Remote has been given the opportunity to apply a unique graffiti design directly on a Formula One car, inspired by the vibrant colours of the AlphaTauri Fashion Spring/Summer collection. The colourful and stylish Showcar will be on display at the completely new and bespoke Red Bull Energy Station, which has been designed and built, especially for the inaugural Miami Grand Prix in Florida.

Before the race weekend, drivers Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda met up with Remote to discover more about graffiti culture, the Miami art scene and to have a first look at the repainted F1 car. In homage to this art project, the same graffiti design will also be featured on the headrest of both AT03 cars raced in Miami while Remote surprised Tsunoda with a special helmet paint job too.

Japanese pilot Tsunoda, 21, revealed:

I am super grateful for the special helmet design that Jay made for me. I had not seen it live before today and it looks super cool. I cannot wait to wear it on track.

The proceeds will be used by the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation to support Miami-based nonprofits such as Dibia Dream, which supports young people through education and the power of sport.

As the inaugural Miami Grand Prix brings the excitement of Formula One to South Florida, IWC Schaffhausen united some of the world’s greatest sporting legends to raise money for social programs in the Miami area. Relaxed and fun, ‘The Big Pilot Challenge’ took place at the Miami Beach Golf Club, an 18-hole golf course located in the heart of South Beach. Former F1 star David Coulthard hosted the event alongside American actor and passionate golf player Kathryn Newton. Mixing Scottish humour with in-depth golfing knowledge, they presented the teams and guided them through the challenge.

FOUR TITAN S CLASH ON THE GREEN

Team ‘Mojave Desert’ brought together two of IWC’s most accomplished brand ambassadors: seven-time American Football World Champion Tom Brady and seven-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton. The other team ‘Lake Tahoe’ comprised retired American Football running back, Marcus Allen, and Dibia DREAM founder and CEO Brandon Okpalobi. The first self-explanatory challenge, called ‘The Longest Drive’, was followed by ‘Closest to Pin’. Here, the objective was to put the ball close to a digit on the dial of a gigantic Big Pilot’s Watch painted onto the green.

Highlighted by 18-inch white Serac wheels, this exclusive package will distinguish this unique theme, extending to the vehicle’s interior: the “South Beach” floor mats will be embroidered in the colours of the liveries, and the blue and pink flags will adorn both the exterior and interior of the A110. Light grey stitching will finish the seats and the leather of the central console.

A WIDE RANGE OF CUSTOMIZATION OPTIONS WITH ATELIER ALPINE

Despite its pop-art and disruptive appearance, the South Beach Colorway fits perfectly into Alpine’s identity, with Bleu Azur and Rose Bruyère being two of the brand’s historic colours. Transforming this retro-looking edition into a unique contemporary icon, made to enjoy every turn of the road. These two colours are taken from the colours made available by the Atelier Alpine customization program. With 20 colours inspired by the brand’s famous heritage colours, the Atelier Alpine also offers multiple additional customization choices: with a variety of wheel finishes available and an extensive brake calliper colour catalogue, each A110 can now be as unique as its owner.

Where are they now: Mark Webber

Mark Webber is an Australian racing driver who competed in Formula 1 for 12 years: from 2002 to 2013. He raced for four teams: Minardi, Jaguar, Williams, and Red Bull.

During this time, he became the winner of a Grand Prix nine times; it is noteworthy that Webber won twice in Monaco and Silverstone. He accumulated an impressive tally of 42 podium finishes and 13 pole positions. Mark took third place at the end of the championship in the seasons of 2010 and 2011, and the final one in his F1 career, 2013. Many years have passed since then, so let’s see what the racer does and where Mark Webber is now.

FIA World Endurance Championship

Already in the middle of the 2013 season, while still competing in Formula 1, Mark Webber said that he would leave the championship at the end of the year. The Aussie announced that he would have driven for Porsche in the FIA World Endurance Championship in the LMP1 class in 2014. In the first season, he got on the podium three times, but in the end, the racer was able to finish the year only in ninth place. 2015 turned out to be much luckier for the Australian driver: he climbed the podium six times and won the WEC championship that year, scoring 166 points! 2016 saw Mark finishing in fourth place, scoring 31.5 points less than last season. Webber decided the time was right for him to retire from racing at the end of the 2016 WEC season.

During Mark’s career in the WEC championship, he took part in The 24 Hours of Le Mans three times. In 2015, Mark Webber and his crew, which also included Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley, managed to take second place. By the way, the racer took part in this legendary race back in 1998 and 1999, before joining Formula 1. In 1999, an aerodynamic error on his Mercedes car forced Webber to literally take off from the track in qualifying on race day, which compelled him to drop out of it.
